The Garden of Gethsemane is the place of solitude of Jesus Christ, where he prayed for the aversion of the cup of sins, the night before he was taken into custody. Very rare in the visual plan, almost the only work on which there is no image of the face of Christ himself.

It was no coincidence that Perov took this step — he wanted to express by this the integrity and holiness of the image of God. After all, any artist depicting Christ involuntarily gives him human, worldly features, those thoughts and feelings that he himself considers to be the truth. Perov did not begin to depict the most, as it seems, expressive element in the image.

On the canvas we see Christ prostrated in prayer. The greenish moonlight slightly illuminates the garden, creating a network of shadows on the earth ... It illuminates the motionless, spread in a prayer figure of Jesus Christ, who came here to speak with his father, the Lord God. His arms, stretched out in supplication, seem deathly pale, his whole figure is shrouded in a plexus of shadows, this oppressive mist, as an omen of impending disasters and impending suffering ...

Gloomy dark trees and shrubs, seeming transparent and ghostly, almost unpainted, hang over Jesus. And as a sign of near martyrdom, as if a crown of thorns froze over Jesus in the air.

Perov sought in this picture to show not even the divine, but rather the human essence of Christ, his worldly principle. He prays, prostrating himself, feeling fear of imminent death, in despair, asks his father to save him. And this momentary weakness expresses a lot, in this fallen backward figure there are more feelings than the expression on the face of the savior could express.
