The last decade and a half of life, Kustodiev was a wheelchair invalid. This happened after an illness and a serious operation on the spinal cord. Partly because in his life he was tormented by constant pain, in his paintings the brightest side of life was always depicted.
Something similar can be seen in the picture "Thunderstorm". An ordinary village or a small provincial town. Church with golden domes, people doing their own thing. Kustodiev was the creator of a new genre - a portrait-picture, a combination of a classic portrait of a famous person with a popular print. In this picture - a portrait of everyday life.
The canvas is as detailed as possible. Each trifle is registered. Most pass by such trifles in life, do not pay attention to them. Bathers in polka dot dresses, a woman running across the river with a basket, a young girl washing clothes, an old woman proving something to her husband near a rickety fence. From the standing train and the numerous shopping counters, you can guess that the fair has just ended here, heading to other cities.
The picture is an almost typical splint: a quiet village, people, a temple, solid houses, a fair. The only thing that is knocked out of the outer gloss is lightning, broken, multi-colored, beating into the dome of the church - after all, initially a high spire is precisely a lightning rod. But even this artist was able to write in a popular print: lightning strikes the temple, leaves it and does not reach people. Nobody pays attention to her, and everyone continues to go about their business.
Thunderstorm is made in traditional Kustodiev technique. He painted in oil and pastel. Oil was used in the image of the sky. Everything that is written below - the church, houses, trees - is a little muffled by pastel. This picture is a successful combination of the Russian character with modern and even impressionism.
