Titian Vecellio is a famous Italian artist who worked during the Renaissance. He is famous not only as a painter, but also as a talented sculptor. The follower of Giovanni Bellini created in the traditional style of that time - sketching from nature. Only with the advent of Giorgione does his unique authorial style appear.
The painting “The Punishment of Marcia” is made in the perfect drawing technique, honed over many years. The artist continues the tradition of depicting myths and legends. It is based on the myth of Apollo and Marsia, who entered into a long debate: Which is better - cipher or flute? Whose mastery is higher - god or satire? Perhaps the artist wanted to show himself as his mind imagined. You can see in the picture how Marsyas, once proud and arrogant, regrets for his deeds.
The picture is made in only three colors, which incredibly accurately betray all the horror of the presented situation. For the arrogance of the satyr they skinned him. The executioner Marcia is Apollo himself, who has fallen to the terrible cruelty of man - he is squatting with a knife in his hand, already sentenced to punishment. At the same time, the figure is sitting to the right of the main character - it resembles an artist who receives an incomprehensible pleasure from the observed scene.
The appearance of dogs on the canvas is also not accidental: in most cultures, the dog is a friend of a person and his faithful protector. It also depicts a heartless and proud dog sitting at a distance, and the second greedily fell down to the martyr's dripping blood.
On the face of Marcia himself, not very many emotions are expressed: only the body language helps to realize what is happening in his inner world. The enemies that torment him are sitting in the shade, and only a glimpse of hope for forgiveness is visible on the left side - the young man with a violin shows his humility to Apollo and sweetens his hearing with music in the hope that God will forgive the satyr for the deed. But his face shows that the punishment is abhorrent to him. Raising his face up, the violinist seems to be detached from what is happening, so as not to observe the whole scene.
The canvas “The Punishment of Marcia” was painted as the artist’s last painting. Titian decided to leave the epistle of pride and arrogance.
